Top Tips for Maintaining Mosquito Misting Systems

As a lover of the outdoors, I know first hand how frustrating it can be to have your space taken over by hordes of mosquitoes. After trying many mosquito control tactics, I finally made the choice to invest in a mosquito misting system - and it was the best decision I ever made! They are a game-changer for keeping your backyard mosquito-free season after season.

Just like any outdoor equipment, misting systems require regular maintenance to keep them in optimal shape. I've learned a few ways to maintain these systems for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Here are some highly recommended tips:

Keep Your Nozzles and Tubing Clean

The nozzles of your misting system can get clogged over time from build up of minerals, dust, or debris. To keep them working well, make it a habit to soak your nozzles in vinegar solution every few months - to dissolve any residue and ensure optimal misting.

It is also recommended to check nozzles regularly and make sure they are properly adjusted for the desired misting pattern, as well as sufficient coverage throughout your yard. To keep them clean, flush your tubing lines from time to time with water to remove any remaining dirt or debris. Apart from nozzles and tubing, remember to clean the pump inlet filter regularly to prevent contaminants from entering.

Inspect Tubing Regularly

Tubing is an essential component of your system. Check the entire length of your tubing line for any holes, cracks or faulty sections. Replace damaged sections promptly to prevent leaks that might reduce the system's coverage. And make sure there are no objects or obstructions inside that might block the water flow.

Stabilize Water Pressure

Consider installing a pressure regulator in your misting system, to keep water pressure stable and within the recommended range. To avoid pressure fluctuations, avoid running other watering equipment or fixtures like hoses or sprinklers at the same time as your misting system.

Replace Worn Out Parts

Like any other device, your system’s components like valves, nozzles, and the pump will succumb to wear and tear over time. Check your parts regularly, and take action by swapping out any aging components before they cause any issues.

Don't Neglect the Timer

As the brain of your mosquito misting system, the automated timer should be kept in top condition. Test its performance periodically, replace batteries as needed, and double-check that your programmed run times are still accurate and relevant, especially if any changes have been made to your outdoor space.

Adjust Run Times

Monitor your system's performance regularly and adjust run times as needed for effective mosquito control. Try to limit run times, as overrunning the system can put unnecessary strain on the pump and valves.

Winterize Your System Well

It’s crucial to fully drain your water lines and nozzles as the temperature starts to drop, in order to prevent freeze damage over winter. Check your system manual for the right steps and instructions on winterization, and consider hiring a professional as well. Remember to shut off the water supply during colder months to prevent your tubing from freezing or cracking.

Following these key maintenance tips will help ensure your misting system continues to provide reliable, year-long protection for your outdoor space. And the best part? You get to spend more quality time with friends and family, instead of dealing with annoying mosquitoes.
