Plants and Trees That Naturally Deter Mosquitoes

Having spent a number of years cultivating plants and gardens, I've also gained some insights into using nature’s bounty to keep annoying mosquitoes at bay. While chemical repellents and pesticides can work well, I always preferred a more natural approach. In fact, there are plenty of plants and trees right in our backyard that naturally deter mosquitoes. Here are my top recommendations for natural mosquito repelling plants that you can easily incorporate into your garden or outdoor space.

Basil

Apart from being a tasty herb frequently used in cooking, basil is also an effective natural mosquito repellent. For a distinctively fragrant and pest-deterring addition to your landscape, plant this herb in full sun and well-drained soil.

Lemongrass

While it is known for being a staple in many Southeast Asian cuisines, lemongrass is also a strong contender in the natural mosquito repellent category. Similar to the smell of citronella, the distinct aroma of lemongrass is off-putting to mosquitoes and drives them away. Plant them in containers or pots near your outdoor seating areas for protection, or use lemongrass leaves to make your own natural pesticide.

Citronella

As one of  the most well-known natural mosquito repelling plants, citronella is also renowned for its powerful lemony scent. The strong lemon-like scent they give off is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, and is enough to keep them away from your immediate surroundings. Given full sun and plenty of water, these plants can grow well in either containers or raised garden beds, not to mention being a vibrant and refreshing addition to your outdoor space.

Catnip

More known for their ability to drive cats into a frenzy, catnip is also a highly effective natural mosquito deterrent. The nepetalactone compound found in the plant's leaves and stems irritate  mosquitoes - making them retreat fast. Grow some catnip around outdoor areas or near pathways to keep those flying pests at bay, or rub their leaves on exposed skin for added protection.

Lavender

To many people, the calming scent of lavender is wonderful for relaxation - but it is also repulsive to mosquitoes. At the core of the plant's mosquito-repelling properties are its powerful aroma and essential oils. Add lavender plants into your garden beds, place them in pots on patios and decks, or line your garden pathways with them to discourage mosquito presence.

Marigolds

Known for their bright and colorful flowers, marigolds are not only aesthetically appealing, but highly effective in repelling mosquitoes. This is largely due to the presence of pyrethrum, a compound that’s used in many insect repellents and sprays. Plant them along walkways or around the perimeter of your garden as a protective barrier.

Garlic

While garlic is famous for its strong smell, it might not be the first plant that comes to mind when looking for mosquito repellents. In fact, the pungent smell of garlic is indeed quite unpleasant to mosquitoes and will keep them away. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil - and you will be rewarded with handy mosquito-repelling plants, as well as delicious bulbs for spicing up home-cooked meals.

Rosemary

Another fragrant herb that’s a staple for many dishes, this plant is also an effective mosquito repellent - due to potent compounds like camphor and limonene found in its essential oil. Plant it in well-drained soil for best results - for a lovely addition to your garden and your kitchen.

Peppermint

Peppermint is another plant that drives mosquitoes away with its distinctive and intense aroma. This is because its minty smell is naturally unpleasant to the flying insects and will discourage their presence. Rub some peppermint leaves on your skin as a natural repellent, or plant them around your backyard and outdoor space to significantly reduce mosquito populations.

Tea Tree

A native of Australia, this tree is well-known for its refreshing scent, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, and also as a mosquito deterrent. Plant them in a place with full sun and watch them thrive, and don’t forget to use their essential oils to fend off mosquitoes.

Eucalyptus

Also native to Australia, these trees are vigorous growers and are well-known for their aromatic leaves. The essential oil of Eucalyptus plants is a common ingredient in repellents, and planting these trees in your garden will keep it mosquito-free.

So there you have it - adding these plants and trees not only beautifies your space, but also helps create a comfortable and pest-free outdoor environment. By fully harnessing their natural properties, you can have a mosquito-free environment that you and your family will enjoy all season long.
